The best first project is small, finishes in a weekend and teaches one skill. These five do that with a short tool list. Wood choice, sizes and plans are for you to decide: use a free plan or sketch your own.
1. A simple cutting board
Teaches: gluing, clamping and sanding. Tools: clamps, sandpaper, a saw for trimming. Note: use a food-safe finish if it will touch food.
2. A planter box
Teaches: square cuts and basic joining with screws and glue. Tools: hand saw, square, drill, clamps.
3. A basic picture frame
Teaches: measuring and cutting matching pieces. Tools: tape measure, square, saw, glue, clamps. Mitres take practice, so start with simple butt joints.
4. A small shelf
Teaches: accurate repeated cuts and fastening to a wall (use wall fixings suited to your wall and load). Tools: tape, square, saw, drill, screws, level.
5. A step stool
Teaches: making a piece that has to carry weight, and checking it for wobble. Tools: saw, square, drill, clamps, sandpaper. Test it carefully before anyone stands on it.
Tips for finishing, not stalling
- Pick one project and finish it before buying new tools.
- Buy a little extra wood for mistakes.
- Write down the cut list before touching the saw.
- Wear safety glasses and hearing protection from the first cut: see safety gear for beginners.
